In Ur Enso, Virginia Cohn Parkum distills gesture, surface, and void into a meditation on presence and pause. The composition is organized around a circular sweep of white and gray paint, its movement visible in layered arcs that spiral inward toward a dense, textured center. The circle is neither perfectly closed nor rigidly defined; instead, it breathes through variations in pressure, opacity, and direction, allowing the act of painting to remain visible as a record of motion.

At the center, thick accumulations of white pigment form a crusted, almost geological surface. This raised texture contrasts with the surrounding veils of diluted gray and scumbled white, creating a tactile tension between density and atmosphere. The circular field appears to churn, as if the paint itself were caught in a slow vortex, while the central mass anchors the composition in material weight.

Originally titled The Space Between the In Breath and Out Breath, the work is grounded in the interval rather than the motion itself. Parkum deepens this concept materially: the canvas has been intentionally punctured, creating a literal aperture that establishes a physical space between the front and back of the surface. This opening transforms the painting from a sealed image into a permeable object. Air, light, and shadow can pass through it, making absence an active component of the work.

The puncture introduces a spatial paradox. While the circular gesture suggests enclosure, the rupture denies containment. The viewer becomes aware not only of the painted surface but of the hidden depth beyond it. In this way, the work articulates the moment of suspension between breaths — a pause that is neither inhalation nor exhalation, neither fullness nor emptiness, but a charged interval of stillness.

The title Ur Enso evokes the Zen enso, the hand-drawn circle symbolizing enlightenment, emptiness, and the unity of form and void. Parkum’s interpretation resists calligraphic purity in favor of physical immediacy. The circle is built through layered abrasion, pressure, and reworking; its surface bears the evidence of time and touch. The central rupture further transforms the enso from symbol into experience: emptiness is not depicted but enacted.

Through gesture, texture, and deliberate interruption, Ur Enso invites contemplation of the threshold. It is the space between motion and stillness, matter and void, surface and depth where awareness resides.
