Artwork Description

The Flower Sutra
Virginia Cohn Parkum, c. Unknown

In The Flower Sutra, Virginia Cohn Parkum creates a contemplative field where figure, flora, and atmosphere merge into a single meditative presence. The composition is built from soft charcoal passages and diffused tonal washes that seem to breathe across the surface rather than sit upon it. Instead of firm outlines, the figure emerges through absence and suggestion — a luminous, nearly white silhouette surrounded by veils of smoky gray.

The seated form suggests a posture of inward stillness. Facial features are reduced to essential marks: a curved line for a closed eye, a gentle contour for the nose, and a simplified mouth, all of which convey quiet introspection. The body is rendered through soft transitions rather than anatomical precision, reinforcing the sense that the figure is less a physical presence than a state of awareness.

To the left, darker tonal density gathers into organic forms that evoke blossoms or unfolding petals. These shapes do not assert themselves as botanical illustration; instead, they appear to hover between plant life and atmospheric bloom. Their textured edges and layered charcoal deposits create a subtle contrast against the pale figure, suggesting growth emerging from shadow or consciousness arising from stillness.

The surrounding field is intentionally unresolved. Smudged gradients, wiped passages, and soft erasures create a sense of space that feels both interior and infinite. The figure appears to dissolve into this environment, echoing the contemplative idea that self and surroundings are not separate but continuous.

The title invokes the language of spiritual teaching, and the work reflects this through its quiet visual rhythm. Rather than illustrating doctrine, Parkum offers an experience of unfolding awareness — like a flower opening in slow time. Light and shadow, form and dissolution, body and breath are held in delicate balance.

The Flower Sutra invites sustained looking and quiet presence. Through restraint, soft tonal transitions, and the merging of figure with organic suggestion, Parkum creates an image that functions less as depiction and more as meditation — a visual field where stillness itself becomes the subject.
