Artwork Description Sumi Love* In Sumi Love, Virginia Cohn Parkum transforms a single word into an event of gesture, breath, and emotional immediacy. Rendered in bold sumi ink, the letters appear less written than enacted, each stroke carrying the physical memory of the brush’s movement across the paper. The composition balances weight and openness. The vertical stroke of the L stands firm and grounded, its dense ink anchoring the word. In contrast, the O is fluid and slightly irregular, revealing the circular motion of the wrist and the soft lift of the brush where the line nearly closes. This near-closure creates a sense of permeability rather than containment, suggesting that love is not a sealed form but an ongoing motion. The V rises sharply, its converging lines executed with speed and confidence. The upper tapering ends show where the brush split and lifted, leaving feathered edges that introduce air into the form. The E concludes the sequence with a combination of structural strength and expressive rupture; its lower stroke breaks open into a dry-brush flare, exposing the fibers of the brush and the absorbency of the paper beneath. This moment of fragmentation feels intentional — an acknowledgment that love carries both force and vulnerability. Variations in ink density reveal Parkum’s control over pressure and moisture. Saturated passages alternate with translucent areas where the paper’s surface glows through the pigment, giving the word a pulse-like rhythm. The small calligraphic flourish beneath functions as both signature and breath mark, grounding the composition in a single lived moment. Rather than presenting love as sentiment, Sumi Love embodies it as action: decisive yet tender, structured yet imperfect, powerful yet fleeting. The work reminds the viewer that love, like ink on paper, exists through contact — an irreversible meeting between intention, movement, and presence. |
