Artwork Description Prelude In Prelude, Virginia Cohn Parkum presents the human face as an unfolding event rather than a finished likeness. The head is constructed through assertive black brush lines and washes of red and gray that shift between transparency and density, allowing the image to hover between presence and dissolution. The figure emerges from a field of pink and pale white, the surrounding space functioning less as background than as an atmospheric field in which the features take shape. The composition is dominated by asymmetry. A saturated red wash occupies the right side of the face, bleeding into the cheek and eye socket, while the left side is cooler and more subdued, modeled with gray and white passages. This imbalance creates a sense of movement across the surface, as though light, emotion, or memory were passing over the face. The red pigment drips downward in narrow streams, emphasizing gravity and the physical behavior of paint while suggesting tears, blood, or the trace of an internal disturbance. These drips introduce time into the image — the face is not static but marked by process and passage. Parkum’s brushwork remains direct and uncorrected. Lines describing the brow, nose, and jaw are swift and unrefined, allowing the viewer to see the immediacy of the gesture that produced them. The eyes, though minimally rendered, anchor the composition and hold the viewer’s attention; they are alert but inward, conveying concentration rather than outward engagement. The slightly parted lips and angled tilt of the head contribute to the sense that the figure is poised on the threshold of speech or thought. The title Prelude suggests a beginning, a moment before event, action, or revelation. Rather than depicting a specific narrative, the painting evokes the instant when an interior state first becomes visible. The face appears caught between concealment and disclosure, as if emotion has surfaced before it can be composed into expression. The tension between controlled line and fluid wash reinforces this sense of emergence, where structure and spontaneity coexist. Through economy of means and visible process, Parkum transforms portraiture into an exploration of reflection. The work does not seek likeness or finish; instead, it captures the fragile moment when identity, feeling, and perception gather into form but have not yet settled into certainty. |
