Artwork Description Leaky Enso In Leaky Enso, Virginia Cohn Parkum takes the Zen symbol of wholeness and deliberately allows it to fail. Where the traditional enso is a complete, balanced circle formed in a single breath, Parkum’s form seeps, collapses, and bleeds beyond its implied boundary. Ink pools and spreads across the surface, creating a dark, organic mass that feels less like a gesture of completion and more like an event unfolding in real time. The composition gathers around a dense, fluid core where pigment has pooled and thickened, producing glossy ridges and sediment-like textures. These accumulations suggest gravity and weight rather than the airy immediacy associated with classical brush enso forms. Ink splatters radiate outward, and translucent washes feather into the surrounding ground, as if the circle has dissolved into its environment. Instead of containing emptiness, the form leaks into it. The “leak” becomes both physical and philosophical. Parkum exposes the instability of boundaries: the impossibility of perfect containment, the permeability between inside and outside, self and world. The enso here is not a sealed unity but a living system — porous, vulnerable, and subject to entropy. The surface itself plays a crucial role. Variations in saturation reveal how liquid moved across the support, leaving tide-like edges and organic blooms that record time and motion. These marks read almost like evidence rather than brushwork, emphasizing process over control. The result is an enso that acknowledges impermanence not as a concept but as a material fact. Leaky Enso reframes completeness as something that seeps, erodes, and transforms — a circle that refuses closure and instead embodies the continuous flow of becoming. |
