Artwork Description

Graphite Horse*
Virginia Cohn Parkum, c. Unknown

Graphite Horse by Virginia Cohn Parkum presents the horse not as a fixed subject but as an event of perception unfolding on the paper. Executed through layered graphite line and atmospheric washes, the work emphasizes the process of seeing and rendering over polished finish. The figure emerges from a field of warm ochres and cool blue-grays that function less as landscape than as a tonal environment, suspending the animal within an indeterminate space. The absence of a defined ground line and the diffusion of color at the lower edge dissolve conventional spatial anchoring, situating the horse in a realm that reads as atmospheric, temporal, and psychological rather than strictly physical.

Parkum’s line is exploratory and cumulative, building form through revision rather than contour. Overlapping strokes trace the structure of the head, torso, and legs while allowing earlier marks to remain visible, creating a palimpsest of observation. This approach conveys not only anatomical structure but also internal energy. The density of line along the chest and forelegs gives a sense of weight and presence, while the mane, tail, and hindquarters fragment into more gestural marks, suggesting motion, breath, and the instability of form. The drawing thus balances construction and dissolution, making the horse appear simultaneously solid and provisional, as though still forming from the surrounding air.

Color operates sparingly but expressively. The warm tonalities evoke earth, dust, and corporeality, while the cooler passages introduce distance and openness. These chromatic zones meet within the body of the horse, reinforcing its role as an intermediary between grounded physical mass and atmospheric space. The work’s emotional tenor is restrained and contemplative; the animal stands in a calm, attentive posture, its quiet stillness charged with latent movement juxtaposed to the line work that makes it up. Rather than presenting a narrative or heroic equestrian image, Parkum offers a meditation on presence, perception, and the vitality that resides in the act of drawing itself.
