Artwork Description Enso Study 2* In Enso Study 2, Virginia Cohn Parkum explores the enso as both disciplined gesture and living trace of motion. The circle is executed in a continuous sweep, yet the brushstroke reveals subtle variations in pressure, speed, and ink saturation that transform the form into a record of embodied movement rather than a static symbol. The lower left quadrant carries the greatest visual weight. Here, the brush deposits a dense, velvety mass of ink, the stroke widening as pressure increases and pigment pools into a soft, rounded termination. This gravity anchors the composition, suggesting the moment when the brush slowed and the hand paused before releasing tension. From that weighted base, the stroke ascends and lightens, the line thinning as the brush lifts and the ink begins to dry. Along the right arc, the circle becomes luminous. Fine striations and translucent passages appear where the brush hairs separate, allowing the white paper to breathe through the stroke. This subtle transparency introduces an inner glow, creating the sensation that light emanates from within the form rather than surrounding it. The circle is not mechanically closed; instead, its continuity relies on momentum and perception, reinforcing the Zen principle that completeness resides in awareness rather than geometric perfection. The faint echo of the brush at the upper arc — a whisper of contact — reveals the speed of the movement and the artist’s confidence in allowing the stroke to resolve itself naturally. The small ink drop and calligraphic signature below further emphasize spontaneity, reminding the viewer that the enso emerges from a moment rather than from deliberation. Enso Study 2 embodies balance between control and surrender. It is at once grounded and airy, deliberate and unforced — a visual record of breath, gravity, and attention unified in a single irreversible act. |
