Artwork Description Reclining Nude in Conte* In Reclining Nude in Conté, V. Morgan uses the economy of drawing to transform a traditional studio subject into an expansive study of contour, weight, and spatial rhythm. The horizontally oriented format is particularly well suited to the reclining figure, allowing the body to unfold across the page rather than appear compressed within a vertical field. Morgan positions the model close to the edges of the composition, creating a sense that the figure continues beyond the boundaries of the sheet. The drawing is constructed primarily through contour. Morgan’s line varies in pressure and density, becoming darker where forms overlap or turn away from the light. The underside of the body, the junctions of the limbs, and the areas around the neck and waist receive the strongest emphasis. These concentrated passages function almost like structural joints, holding together the otherwise open and lightly rendered figure. This alternation between assertive and nearly disappearing line gives the work its vitality. Certain contours are repeated or adjusted, preserving evidence of the artist’s search for the correct placement. Rather than concealing these revisions, Morgan allows them to remain visible. The result feels observational and responsive, recording not only the model’s body but also the process of looking. The composition is governed by a series of opposing diagonals. The raised leg moves upward from left to center, while the torso descends gently toward the right. The reclining arm and hanging hand extend this movement beyond the shoulder, creating a long wave-like progression across the page. These diagonals are balanced by the broad horizontal orientation of the figure, producing a composition that is restful without becoming inert. Negative space plays an essential role. The unworked paper within and around the figure acts as a source of light, while the open triangular area beneath the lifted leg gives the pose clarity and tension. Morgan avoids enclosing every form with equal force, allowing certain passages to dissolve into the surrounding surface. This makes the figure feel atmospheric even though the drawing is fundamentally linear. The model’s anatomy is conveyed through compression and elongation rather than strict academic precision. Foreshortening causes portions of the body to overlap, while the lifted leg and turned torso create subtle distortions in scale. These deviations do not weaken the study. Instead, they communicate the experience of viewing the figure from a particular position and preserve the immediacy of the sitting. The handling of the head and hand introduces an expressive counterpoint to the broader masses of the torso and legs. The head is tilted back, with the facial features reduced to a few delicate marks. The hand, by contrast, extends downward with long articulated fingers. Both areas suggest vulnerability and release, but neither is overdeveloped. Morgan keeps the emotional tone understated, allowing posture to carry more meaning than facial expression. The conté medium contributes warmth and softness while still providing the firmness required for structural drawing. Its reddish-brown tone recalls traditional figure studies and gives the work an earthy, bodily quality. Morgan uses smudging sparingly, reserving it for areas where volume or shadow is needed. The restraint prevents the drawing from becoming overly modeled and preserves the elegance of the line. Although the nude has long been central to academic training, this work feels less concerned with demonstrating technical mastery than with capturing a specific bodily state. The figure appears relaxed, but the pose contains subtle tension through the raised leg, extended neck, and loosely hanging hand. That balance between repose and strain gives the drawing its psychological depth. Reclining Nude in Conté succeeds as both an anatomical study and an intimate record of temporary stillness. |
