Artwork Description Lady in Blue* In Lady in Blue, Virginia Cohn Parkum presents the seated female figure as a presence formed through atmosphere rather than contour. The body emerges from layered veils of ultramarine and pale cerulean, its edges softened until figure and surrounding space merge. Rather than defining anatomy through line, Parkum builds the form through tonal diffusion, allowing the torso, shoulders, and bent leg to materialize gradually within a field of shifting blues. The composition places the figure in a grounded yet ambiguous setting. A dark, angular mass at the lower left suggests a rock, seat, or structural support, anchoring the figure physically while intensifying the luminosity of the body above it. Behind the figure, warm rust-red passages interrupt the cool palette, creating chromatic tension that heightens the sense of bodily presence. These warmer tones do not establish a literal environment; instead, they function as atmospheric counterpoints, emphasizing the corporeal coolness of the figure. Parkum’s handling of paint emphasizes translucency and accumulation. Thin layers allow underlying colors to glow through the surface, while softly scumbled passages register the movement of the brush without hard edges. The chest and shoulders are modeled through subtle tonal shifts rather than sculptural definition, producing a sense of internal light rather than external illumination. The head, only faintly articulated, dissolves into the surrounding field, shifting attention from identity toward bodily presence and sensation. The dominance of blue introduces multiple associations: coolness, introspection, distance, and calm. Yet the color is not passive. Variations from pale blue to deeper ultramarine generate depth and movement, suggesting breath and circulation rather than stillness. The figure’s posture — seated with one leg drawn inward — conveys repose, but the fluid handling of paint prevents the pose from becoming static. The body appears to hover between rest and dissolution, as though sustained by atmosphere rather than gravity alone. Within Parkum’s larger practice, often marked by psychic tension and corporeal distortion, this work offers a more contemplative encounter with the human form. The figure is neither fragmented nor dramatized; instead, she exists in a state of quiet presence, defined by light, color, and spatial drift. The painting resists portrait specificity, presenting the body as an experiential field where sensation, environment, and perception converge. Through its diffusion of contour and emphasis on chromatic atmosphere, Lady in Blue transforms the seated figure into a meditation on embodiment. The work invites sustained viewing, allowing the eye to adjust to its tonal subtleties and to experience the figure not as a fixed object but as a luminous presence emerging within a field of air and light. |
