Artwork Description

Elysian Fields*
Virginia Cohn Parkum, c. Unknown

Elysian Fields marks a notable moment of release within Virginia Cohn Parkum’s broader body of work, which often confronts the viewer with fractured figures, existential strain, and the psychic residue of human violence. Here, the visual field opens into a landscape-like expanse defined by soft tonal transitions and restrained gesture. Pale greens and aquamarines spread across the surface in thin veils of pigment, creating an atmosphere of suspension rather than description. The horizon line is suggested rather than fixed, allowing space to feel continuous and breathable.

The composition is anchored by a low, undulating form in the middle distance, rendered in cool blue-green tones that dissolve into the surrounding field. This shape reads ambiguously as hill, shoreline, or distant ridge, but its indistinctness resists geographical specificity. Beneath it, a quieter, deeper blue shape rests within the foreground, its edges softened as though absorbed into the surrounding color. These forms do not assert themselves; instead, they settle into the pictorial field, encouraging slow looking and a sense of spatial calm.

Parkum’s handling of paint is markedly restrained. Thin layers allow the ground to breathe through the surface, while faint textures and softened transitions register the movement of the hand without insistence. The sky is rendered in pale grays with a faint blush of pink drifting near the upper left, introducing a gentle warmth that prevents the palette from becoming inert. Light seems diffused rather than directional, suggesting atmosphere rather than illumination.

Within an oeuvre frequently marked by tension and corporeal distortion, this work offers a rare suspension of psychic pressure. The absence of figures removes the site of bodily suffering that often anchors Parkum’s imagery. Instead, the viewer encounters openness and a space not charged by trauma but shaped by reflective continuity. The painting does not declare serenity; rather, it provides a momentary reprieve, a clearing in which visual tension is replaced by spatial drift and tonal balance.

Parkum’s reduction of form and emphasis on atmospheric transitions shifts attention toward perception itself — how the eye moves across subtle tonal gradations and how space can be suggested without force. In this context, the painting functions less as an escape from the darker themes of her work than as a necessary counterpoint, offering a visual field in which rest, distance, and reflection become possible.
